Export errors

What each message on the export result page means when a direct export to Shopify fails for a product, what caused it, and whether running the export again is safe.

A direct export reports its result product by product. A product that Shopify refused is listed as failed with the message Shopify returned, and the same message is shown once with every product it affected. Products that succeeded are not affected by the failures and are never sent twice.

Re-running the export is safe in Smart upsert (by Handle) mode: products that already exist are updated, the failed ones are created. In Create new products mode a re-run fails every product whose handle is already in the store.

Messages from Shopify

Handle already in use. Please provide a new handle.

The store already has a product with this handle and the export ran in create-only mode. Run it again in update mode to update that product, or change the handle in the Fix step to create a second product.

Title can’t be blank

The product row has no title. Portaim’s checks flag this before export; it appears here only when the row was changed after validation. Go back to the Fix step.

Duplicated option value

Two rows of the product resolve to the same option values. Shopify requires each variant’s options to be unique. Edit one row’s option value, or delete the duplicate row.

Validation failed: The name contains unsupported sequence ’ / ’

Shopify does not accept / (space, slash, space) inside an option name. Rename the option in the mapping step.

Throttled

Shopify’s API rate limit was reached. Portaim waits and retries this on its own; a product listed with this message after the export finished was retried without success. Run the export again in update mode.

Daily variant creation limit reached

Shopify caps how many variants a store can create per day. Wait until the next day and run the export again in update mode; the products created so far are kept.

Messages from Portaim

Reconnect Portaim to enable Shopify’s standard attributes

Not a failure. The store has not approved the metaobject permissions that product attributes need. Settings and the Export step show Permissions update; approve it and export again. Until then, attributes are written as custom metafields and the products themselves still export.

HTTP 401, HTTP 403

Shopify refused Portaim’s access token. Usually the app was uninstalled from the store or the connection was removed from Settings while the export was running. Reconnect the store and run the export again.

HTTP 5xx

Shopify’s API was unavailable. Run the export again in update mode.

Used the closest category your store supports

Not a failure. The store runs a taxonomy version without the exact category Portaim matched, so the nearest parent category it does have was used. Change it in Shopify if a closer one exists there.

Shopify returned success but no product ID

Shopify accepted the product but did not return its identifier, so Portaim could not record what was created. Check the product in Shopify’s admin; run the export again in update mode to reconcile.

A message not listed here

Shopify’s wording changes between API versions. Email [email protected] with the message and the export date, and we add it here.
